Let the energy flow - rivers in Oberstdorf

Did you know that three rivers originate in the mountains around Oberstdorf and converge at the source of the Iller River, just outside Germany's southernmost municipality? This means that you'll be offered a refreshing dip on almost every hike.

The Breitach

The Breitach river is about a 20-minute walk from the hotel, and every few meters you'll find shallow spots perfect for wading, splashing around, or skipping stones. Building cairns is, of course, very popular and great fun.

A little further on, you'll reach the Breitachklamm gorge, where you can experience the power of the water up close.

The Stillach

The walk to the ski jump is particularly pleasant along the Stillach river. The meandering river offers beautiful views of the Oberstdorf mountains, and between the Ziegelbachhütte and the ski jump, you can even dangle your feet and arms in the water. 😊
A visit to the ski jump, with its magnificent view over the Freibergsee lake, is definitely something you should plan.

The Trettach

From Oberstdorf into the Trettach Valley – here you'll find not only delightful places to stop for refreshments along the way, but also a spot where you can easily get into the water about every 10 minutes. Perfect for regularly cooling off, inside and out 😉

The highlight is definitely Lake Christlessee, which, with its dark green to black water, exudes a very special atmosphere.

De rivieren Breitach, Trettach en Stillach ontspringen in drie valleien en komen hier, vlak voor het stadje Oberstdorf, samen om de rivier Iller te vormen.

Illerursprung

Zwischen Oberstdorf und Fischen im Allgäu liegt der Illerursprung. Aus den drei Gebirgsflüsse Trettach, Stillach und Breitach wird hier der größte Fluss im Allgäu - die Iller. Nach 147 km, in denen sich die Iller bis nach Ulm schlängelt, mündet sie in die Donau.

Übrigens, den Name Iller trägt der Fluss seit 1413. Zuvor wurden immer wieder andere Bezeichnungen verwendet. Ursprünglich taucht der Name "Hilaria" im 8. Jahrhundert in den Geschichtsbüchern auf.
