Stories from the Hotel Oberstdorf in the Allgäu
A journey of discovery in the restaurant of the Hotel Oberstdorf
Did you know? At Hotel Oberstdorf, many things are different from ordinary hotels in the Allgäu region. Even the wooden ceiling in the restaurant has its own story. Read on to find out why. Here is the first story from Hotel Oberstdorf.
The extraordinary Allgäu restaurant ceiling
Close your eyes and imagine this:
You're sitting in our cozy restaurant, in the traditional section, on one of the original Allgäu chairs. It's a wonderful winter morning, and the scent of coffee and a crackling fire welcomes you and your day of vacation. Your gaze wanders leisurely around the room, and your eyes are drawn to the cowbells hanging from the ceiling. As you examine the different sizes and leather straps, another special detail steals into your awareness.

The beautiful wooden ceiling with its various wooden panels is…

...now you notice it for the first time... covered with many different lines! What could that be about?
Have you ever wondered what's going on here? Were those perhaps woodworms synchronously making their way through the ceiling?
In 2007, the Alpen Restaurant was expanded, and the space above was used for eight new rooms. One day, interior designer Peter Trunzer was on his way to a planning meeting in Oberstdorf and entered the Hotel Oberstdorf address into his navigation system to find the quickest route. However, he accidentally selected the contour line setting instead of the actual road network. He liked this view so much that he had the idea of integrating these contour lines into the new restaurant ceiling. And so, you can now admire Oberstdorf from a completely new perspective, and if you look closely, you can even find the hotel. Because, of course, we couldn't resist immortalizing this important location in the ceiling.
